“Sorry about that,” Olivia said when she returned to the porch. “That little girl is too smart for her own good. She can sense things and sometimes she doesn’t know what she’s sensing. If that makes… sense.”

I looked at Olivia. “I’m not a bad guy, Olivia. I would never hurt a child. I know I look like the guy you’d run from. I get it. The ripped jeans. The leather jacket. The dirty hat and messy hair. I have a bad reputation too. Yeah, I’m kind of famous. I write music, play shows, and a lot of times it’s women who like my music the most. But I’m not a bad guy.”

Olivia swallowed hard. “Sorry about that.”

“I do have a heart,” I said. “It might be a little dusty and need some attention, but lately it’s been getting that. From Mila. That’s why I’m here. To try and pay some of that attention back to her.”

“Okay,” Olivia said.

“And just so you know, I know everything. About everything. And if me talking to Lucy or offering her a fist bump pisses you off or pisses off Tyler, just be honest. I’ll back off.”

“It’s not that, Silas. It’s…” Olivia shook her head. “They just want to protect their sister. I can’t say what’s right and wrong anymore with it. Sometimes I can see their point of view. Sometimes I can’t. I feel stuck in the middle.” She then pointed to me. “When you say you know everything…”

I grinned. “I know you and Tyler are engaged. And the first engagement ring you wore was from Jett. That was the guy who proposed to Mila. She was going to run off with him but then Mr. Justa got sick and Mila stayed. Jett left. That always tore her apart. And then you wore the engagement ring because Lucy’s birth mother showed up to cause some issues. Need I keep going?”

Olivia tightened her lips.

Then she laughed.

“What’s so funny?” I asked.

“You said Mr. Justa,” she said. “That sounds so weird.”

“Weird?”

“Yeah. I’ve only heard of him as Dad and Hank.”

“Well, I prefer to call him Mr. Justa,” I said. “Out of respect.”

“You really do know a little of everything,” Olivia said.

“And here I am,” I said. “Sitting on Tyler’s front porch, talking to his fiancée, wondering what in the hell am I doing with my life.”

“Well, Silas,” Olivia said, laughing, “here’s the honest truth about this town and the Justa family. When you’re here, you’re here. You get stuck. You fall in love with it all.”

I nodded. “Then I guess everyone better get used to me being around, huh?”

Olivia exhaled a deep breath. “I don’t know what to say to that, Silas.”

The front door opened and this time it wasn’t Lucy.

It was Mila, followed by Tyler.

Tyler eyed Olivia, then me, then back to Olivia.

“Problem?” Olivia asked.

“No,” Tyler said. “Everything good?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I was just hitting on your fiancée.”

I stood up.

Olivia jumped up. “He’s kidding, Tyler.”

“Plus, we all know it’s Crosby’s job to flirt with Olivia,” Mila said.
